The Citron Cockatoo is few and far between here at FEBS, and unfortunately they are in the wild as well. A few years ago, their numbers in the wild were at 2,000–3,000. Now it is estimated there are around 500 left. One of the main reasons these beautiful creatures are loosing their homes is illegal trapping for the pet trade. One big concern that parrot owners have bringing their bird to FEBS is their diet. We have a carefully laid out diet plan for our residents! All parrots get worked over to our diet over the course of 6-8 weeks. Special needs aside, our parrots are on a pellet diet. They get nuts (size appropriate almonds/ walnuts, we avoid peanuts) in the morning. Fresh fruit and veggies are passed out daily in the afternoon. While for most states, June 1st doesn’t mean much, for southern states, June 1st means the start of hurricane season! This day doesn’t sneak up on us at FEBS. There is a lot of effort in to preparing for these months berore they even happen.
