What’s grey, has two wings, and is covered in orange slime? No, not your local “swamp monster” – the correct answer is: An African Grey attacking a fresh pumpkin with gusto!!
Our parrots go crazy over fresh fruits and vegetables! Produce is a vital supplement to the nutritious dry-pellet mix we feed most of our birds. And here’s a “fun fact” you may not know: Fresh produce can also be a source of entertainment for a parrot – these Greys are getting in some welcome playtime as they eat an unexpected treat!
A big “shout-out” of thanks goes to Steve Miller, FEBS employee Sarah Tipton’s pitching coach, for recently giving us several pumpkins to be enjoyed by our feathered residents. We appreciate Sarah’s thoughtfulness in arranging the gift, as well as her ongoing service to the sanctuary.
Fresh food is expensive, but the dietary wellbeing of our birds demands that we provide it on a regular basis. (We spend $2,100 each month on average for fresh or frozen fruits, vegetables and nuts.) You can help by regularly donating through our website (https://www.flabirdsanctuary.org/make-a-donation); alternatively, for information on joining our Friends of FEBS community or becoming a member of our Major Benefactor team, contact our Treasurer, Dennis Padget, at Dennis@flabirdsanctuary.org.
We are always on the lookout for local sources of fresh or frozen produce, fruits and nuts that might be less expensive. For example, you may be or may know a grower, wholesaler or retailer who is willing to discount or donate produce that is nearing its “best if sold buy” date. If you can assist us in this way, please contact our Vice President, Stephanie Dripps, at Stephanie@flabirdsanctuary.org.
On behalf of the directors, officers, employees and volunteers at Florida Exotic Bird Sanctuary, we wish you a delightful and blessed upcoming Holiday Season!
