Eclectus Move to Modern Housing

Last Wednesday we told you about our new duplex aviary, the second structure built for Phase I of our major expansion project. We mentioned as well that the southern half of the aviary, measuring 24’x24’, is the new home of many of our Eclectus residents. We’re delighted to report to you now on these amazing, very intelligent birds in their modern home!

Those of you who are studied patrons of the parrot world know that “conventional wisdom” says you’re in for serious trouble if you put two female Eclectus in the same enclosure. An important part of our charitable mission is to contribute to the annals of verified facts about parrot behavior: Our experimentation conclusively shows that multiple female Eclectus can indeed thrive in the same environment, provided each is allotted sufficient space to claim as her personal “safe zone”.

Our Eclectus flock for the past five years has been shuffled here-and-there on our grounds in search of just the right environment. When the expansion program got underway, we realized that the opportunity to build a modern, spacious new home for these lovely birds lay before us! Watch as several of our Eclectus residents get used to their new habitat:

We are very fortunate that the expansion funds available to us permit a degree of experimentation in the layout of the new aviaries. The flexibility allows us to achieve optimal land use and maximum housing comfort and utility for our parrots.

FEBS relies solely on the generosity of individuals, businesses, estates, and private foundations to fund our daily operations and capital expansion needs. Are you motivated to help us accomplish our mission and provide lifelong care to our feathered residents? You can donate via our website (https://www.flabirdsanctuary.org/make-a-donation) or by mailing a check to 8933 Casper Avenue, Hudson, FL 34667. For information on structured giving and related matters, contact our Treasurer, Dennis Padget, via email at Dennis@flabirdsanctuary.org. Thank you in advance for your love and support.
